Overview
US’s best-selling mid-size SUV
The 2007 Ford Explorer is a mid-size SUV manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Launched in 1990, the Explorer has since been the best-selling mid-size SUV in the U.S.

The Ford Explorer is available in four-door models. It is offered in five-seater and seven-seater configurations, and in 2-wheel drive (2WD) and 4-wheel drive (4WD) versions.

The 2007 Ford Explorer is the fourth-generation Explorer. It is available in four trims: Explorer XLT, Explorer Eddie Bauer, Explorer Limited, and Explorer Ironman.

It comes with a bumper to bumper warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of five years or 60,000 miles. The Explorer competes with the likes of Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Nissan Pathfinder, and Toyota 4Runner.

Engine and Performance
Two rocking engines to choose from
With a choice of four trims, the Explorer offers a choice of two robust engines. The XLT, Eddie Bauer, Limited, and Ironman are powered by a standard 4.0-liter V6 engine, which generates 210 hp @ 5,100 rpm and 254 lb-ft. of torque @ 3,700 rpm. It is mated to 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

All trims are available with the option of a 4.6-liter V8 engine that churns out 292 hp @ 5,750 rpm and 300 lb-ft. @ 3,950 rpm. It is linked to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Both the engines feature a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC). Fuel is delivered to both the engines by means of a multi-port Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection.

Walk-around
Ruggedness mingles with style
The 2007 Explorer looks rugged yet stylish. It measures 193.4 inches in length and stands on a wheelbase that measures 113.7 inches.

The XLT features black front and rear bumpers while the Eddie Bauer comes standard with Pueblo Gold front and rear bumpers. The Limited gets body-color front and rear bumpers.

The Eddie Bauer comes with an attractive grille, featuring a chrome 3-bar design with nostrils, while the XLT and the Limited feature an attractive chrome 4-bar design grille. Auto lamp on/off delay headlamps are standard on the Eddie Bauer and Limited.

All trims come standard with power fold-away outside mirrors, center high-mounted incandescent stoplight, fog lamps, and roof-side rails. Also standard is a one-piece lift-gate, hinged at the top with a flip-open rear window. The Eddie Bauer and Limited trims also feature running boards.

The Eddie Bauer and Limited trims feature a body-color body-side molding. All trims come standard with wheel-lip moldings, with a difference of colors. The XLT features black, Eddie Bauer comes with Pueblo Gold, while the Limited possesses body-color wheel-lip molding.

All trims come standard with solar tinted windshield and front door windows, and an enhanced privacy glass on the rear door, rear quarter, and lift-gate window. A power moon-roof with shade and heated windshield are optional on all trims of the 2007 Ford Explorer.

The XLT and Ironman trims come standard with 16-inch painted aluminum wheels. These trims are also available with the option of 17-inch machined aluminum wheels. Eddie Bauer rolls on 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, while the Limited glides on 18-inch machined aluminum wheels. 18-inch chrome clad aluminum wheels are optional on the Eddie Bauer as well as Limited. The XLT and Ironman are available with the option of 18-inch machined aluminum wheels.

Different trims of the Explorer are available with different optional packages. The XLT is available with the optional XLT Appearance Package. It includes color-keyed front and rear fascias, color-keyed wheel-lip moldings, black running boards, 17-inch machined aluminum wheels, 17-inch all-season outline white letter (OWL) tires, and a unique film on door bezels.

Comfort, Controls & Convenience
A unique blend of comfort & versatility
The Explorer rolls comfort, utility, and versatility into one. It offers comfortable seating for up to seven passengers.

The XLT comes standard with cloth-trimmed low-back bucket seats in the first row, a 2-way adjustable head restraint, a manual driver lumbar, and manual recline. It also comes with the option of a 6-way power driver’s seat.

The Eddie Bauer features standard leather-trimmed low-back sport bucket seats in the first row with a 10-way power driver’s seat, including power lumbar and recline, a manual passenger seat with manual lumbar and recline, and vinyl-trimmed seats in the third-row seat, if equipped. This seating is optional on the XLT.

The Limited comes standard with leather-trimmed heated bucket seats with a 10-way power driver’s seat in the first row, including power lumbar and recline, a 6-way power passenger’s seat with manual lumbar and recline, and vinyl-trimmed third-row seats, if equipped. This seating is optional on the Eddie Bauer.

All trims of the Explorer come standard with 60/40 split/folding bench seat with backrest recline in the second row. A manual 50/50 split/fold-flat bench seat in the third row is standard on the Limited and optional on the XLT and Eddie Bauer. A PowerFold 50/50 split/fold-flat bench in the third row is optional on all the trims.

The Limited and Eddie Bauer are also available with the optional Quad Bucket Seating Group, which includes second-row sport bucket seats and second-row floor console (requires third-row seat).

The XLT and Eddie Bauer come standard with manual air-conditioning, while the Limited comes standard with dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, which is available on Eddie Bauer as part of the optional Eddie Bauer Luxury Package. Auxiliary rear climate control is standard on the Limited, but requires third-row seats. It is optional on the other trims.

The XLT features a color-keyed, urethane steering wheel with tilt column and cruise control, while the Eddie Bauer comes with color-keyed, leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt column and cruise control. A color-keyed, leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt column, cruise and audio/climate controls is standard on the Limited.

All trims come standard with power windows, power door locks with illuminated controls, intermittent rear wipers and speed sensitive front wipers, 12-volt power points, and power fold-away outside mirrors. All trims also feature a Cargo Management System, which helps in safe and secure storage of luggage and belongings.

A Reverse Sensing with radar backup aid is standard on the Limited and optional on the rest of the trims.

You can explore various entertainment options available on the Ford Explorer. The XLT and Eddie Bauer come standard with a single CD player, MP3 player, and an 80-watt AM/FM radio with an audio input jack. The Limited features a standard Audiophile Sound System with AM/FM stereo/6-disc in-dash CD changer with an audio input jack and MP3 capability, sub-woofer and 290 watts. This audio system is optional on the other trims.

The 5-passenger Explorer offers 45.1 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row, while the 7-passenger Explorer can accommodate ample luggage in its 43.9-cubic feet of cargo space, behind the second row. When properly equipped, the Explorer offers an available maximum towing capacity of 7,290 pounds.

Some optional packages available on different trims of the Explorer are the Convenience Group, the Ultimate Convenience Group, the XLT Comfort Group, the XLT Leather Heated Seats Package, the Eddie Bauer Luxury Package, and the Ironman Package.

Driving Impressions
A pleasure to drive
The Explorer is available in a standard 2WD and an optional 4WD version. The available Control Trac 4WD System provides sure-footed control on all kinds of road conditions. The 4WD system offers three modes to choose from, the 4x4 AUTO setting for everyday driving, 4x4 LOW for serious off-road ventures, and 4x4 HIGH for extra traction.

All trims of the Explorer deliver impressive power and fuel economy. It is maneuvered by a reliable power rack-and-pinion steering, which offers direct, quick responses.

The Explorer’s front suspension includes independent short-arm and long-arm architecture with coil-over shock and stabilizer bar, and the rear suspension comprises of an independent trailing blade short-arm and long-arm architecture with coil-over shock and stabilizer bar. It also comes with front and rear HD gas-charged shocks. This suspension system braces the Explorer to soak up bumps and irregularities on roads and offer a smooth ride.

Anti-lock power with 4-wheel disc brakes in the front as well as rear offer sharp and forceful stopping power to the Explorer.

With a ground clearance of 8.2 inches, the Explorer can take on rough terrains with great ease. All in all, it offers a comfortable, cushy ride.

Safety
5-star safety
In 2006 and 2007, the Explorer was awarded a 5-star crash test rating for all four seating positions, which includes driver and right front passenger for frontal crash, and front and rear seating positions for side-impact. The Explorer boasts of a standard Intelligent Safety System (ISS) and standard side-impact airbags, which go a long way in protecting its occupants.

The ISS includes adaptive driver and front-passenger airbags, an adaptive energy-absorbing steering column, adaptive load-limiting safety belt retractors, a five-level front passenger sensing system, and LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Child safety seats). The ISS processes information from a host of refined sensors and fine-tunes the performance of the Explorer's driver and front-passenger airbags, adaptive load-limiting safety belt retractors, and the adaptive steering column to augment protection in the event of frontal collisions.

It also features Standard AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control (RSC), which offers added safety in a variety of driving situations, such as sudden maneuvers and driving on slippery surfaces or rough surfaces.

For its own security, the Explorer comes standard with a SecuriLock immobilizer anti-theft system, a remote keyless entry system (key fobs), and an auto-lock. A keyless entry with keypad is standard on the Eddie Bauer and Limited trims, and optional on the XLT trim. A remote start system is optional on all the trims.
