The F-150 is a series of full-size pickup trucks from the Ford Motor Company. The F-150 was introduced in 1975 and has been the best-selling pickup truck in the United States for more than 30 years now. It is a member of the sixth-generation of the Ford F-Series trucks.

The F-150 is available in three cab-styles: Regular Cab, Super Cab, and Super Crew. The Regular Cab models can seat up to three passengers, while the Super Cab and Super Crew models can seat a maximum of six passengers. The F-150 is available in 2-wheel drive (2WD) and 4-wheel drive (4WD) versions.

The F-150 is offered in eight models: XL, STX, XLT, FX2 Sport Package, FX4, Lariat, King Ranch Package, and Harley-Davidson.

For 2007, the E-150 introduced two new models: the FX2 Sport and the Harley-Davidson. It also received some subtle upgrades for the year. A new DVD navigation system and Sirius satellite radio were added to the options list, the 4.6-liter V-8 engine received a power boost, and a 5.4-liter E85 flexible fuel engine was added to the engine lineup.

The F-150 comes with a bumper to bumper warranty of three years or 36,000 miles and a powertrain warranty of five years or 60,000 miles. It competes with the likes of Chevrolet Silverado, Dodge Ram Pickup, GMC Sierra, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, and Chevrolet Avalanche.

Engine and Performance
A choice of three potent engines
With eight trims, the F-150 offers a choice of three powerful engines. The 2WD versions of XL, STX, and XLT are powered by a 4.2-liter V6 engine that produces 202 hp @ 4,350 rpm and 260 lb-ft. of torque @ 3,750 rpm. This engine is mated to a standard 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive but the option of an electronic 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is also available.

The 4WD versions of XL, STX, and XLT come with a standard 4.6-liter Triton V8 engine that delivers 248 hp @ 4,750 rpm and 294 lb-ft. @ 4000 rpm. It is linked to an electronic 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

The FX2 Sport Package, FX4, Lariat, King Ranch Package, and Harley-Davidson derive power from a 5.4-liter Triton V8 engine, which churns out 300 hp @ 5,000 rpm and 365 lb-ft. @ 3,750 rpm. This engine is mated to an electronic 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, and is optional on the XL and XLT trims.

In all the three engines, fuel is delivered through a Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection (SEFI). When properly equipped, the F-150 can tow up to 11,000 pounds.

Walk-around
Rough & tough, yet stylish
The F-150 looks rugged with its square-shoulders, and has got a utilitarian and functional look, but that does not mean that it lags behind in style; its style emphasizes its bold and sturdy demeanor.

The F-150 comes with a square nose with a large bold grille opening. Its front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a direct, modern appearance. The front part of its door windows drops sharply downward, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives it visual strength.

Each model of the F-150 looks quite distinctive. The various models come with different types of front and rear bumpers in diverse colors such as Argent, Dark Shadow Grey, Chrome, Pueblo Gold, or body-color. Grille surround may be Black, Chrome, or body-color. While the XLT and Lariat feature a honeycomb grille, the XL, STX, FX4, and King Ranch come with bar-style grilles.

The F-150 comes with clear lens quad-beam halogen headlamps and a cargo lamp with integrated high-mount stop lamps. Fog lamps are optional on the XL, STX, XLT, and FX2 Sport Package, and standard on the FX4, Lariat, King Ranch Package, and Harley-Davidson.

The XL and STX feature manual windows, while the other trims come standard with power windows. With three body-styles, the F-150 offers a choice of three bed lengths and three bed styles. Every bed, irrespective of its length or style, is more than 22 inches deep, for convenient hauling of large cargoes. The Regular Cab models may have either a 6.5-feet or 8.0-feet cargo bed, while the Super Cab models may be equipped with a 5.5-feet or 6.5-feet or 8.0-feet cargo bed. However, Super Crew models are equipped with a shorter, 5.5-feet cargo bed. The 5.5, 6.5, and 8.0 feet cargo beds are designed as slab-sided, and are called Styleside. However, the 6.5-feet bed is also available with flared fenders, called Flareside.

All models, including Regular Cab, have four doors. Doors in the Super Cab are larger than those on the Regular Cab models, while the Super Crew models come with four full-size doors. Regular Cabs and Super Cabs have narrow rear-hinged back doors on both sides called access panels. These access panels cannot be opened unless the front doors are open. A power sliding rear window is also available as optional on the F-150. All trims come standard with a removable tail-gate with key lock and Tail-gate Assist, and cargo box tie-down hooks.

The XL, STX, and XLT come standard with 17-inch wheels, the FX2 Sport Package, FX4, Lariat, and King Ranch Package roll on standard 18-inch wheels while the Harley-Davidson glides on standard 22-inch wheels.

Driving Impressions
Drivability enhanced
The F-150 is available in standard 2WD and optional 4WD versions. The 4WD system automatically distributes power between the front and rear wheels, depending upon driving conditions. The F-150 is directed by a power rack-and-pinion steering, which offers direct and quick responses.

The 4.2-liter V6 is nice and smooth and a practical choice for work trucks. The 5.4-liter Triton V8 engine delivers quick acceleration and is even and quiet. The 4-speed automatic transmission is smooth and responsive offering quick downshifts while shifting almost seamlessly during cruising.

The F-150 rides on an independent double-wishbone with coil-over shock and cast aluminum lower control arm front suspension and a leaf spring/solid axle rear suspension. It also features heavy-duty gas-pressurized shocks in the front and rear. This suspension system controls the vehicle’s motion in quick maneuvers, offers better control on risky surfaces, and also minimizes the risk of skidding.

Stopping power is supplied by power 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, which are sharp, smooth, and responsive.
